Speed Up BITCOMET!!

Jul 20, 2008, 06:00 AM [Reply]

**UPDATED

To most of you who suffer from poor downloading, here are some things that will surely boost your downloading speed.

1. First of all check your upload rate here www.dslreports.com/speedtest?more=1 or here www.speedtest.net (don't click it, just copy and paste, it redirects to some other site) now make a note of your upload speed. IF its in Kb/s (kiloBITS per second) just divide by 8 and you will roughly get the speed in KB/s (kiloBYTES per second).

NOTE: Im using version 1.10 in this post, some of you may have older or newer, I'm also using Vista HOME premium but all of this also works on XP and SOME older versions of windows

2. Following the picture above go to OPTIONS go to CONNECTION and in the GLOBAL MAX UPLOAD RATE, put 80% of your MAX upload speed (Example: if your upload speed was 115KB/s multiply it by .8 and you get 92KB/s) that is roughly your max upload speed, usually you subtract 4kB/s because oflosses in the line that are inevitable.

Another way of doing this, simple but less accurate, is leaving your global max upload rate on a high leeching torrent (that way it SHOULD be at its highest)and the max number you get that is your max upload.

3. Port Mapping, this is the auto-portforwarding feature of Bitcomet. IF, and only IF, you already did portfarwarding manually, then you don't have to do this step and you must have this two options disabled. Put a checkmarck on  "Enable NAT/Firewall configuration" to "Remove port on NAT/firewall"

4. Remember the port you already have, now put your listening port between 49152 to 65534. If it slowed down then go back to the one that gave you a good download speed (good download speed is close to the speed your ISP provides you) Check if the port you chose is ok by going here http://www.canyouseeme.org/

**If you have PORT-MAPPING ENABLED (on) and firewalled it will only see your port if you have bitcomet on, if you close bitcomet and check your port it will tell you it's closed.

**From "Add tags to new task automatically according to file type" to "Play sound when task finished" are all optional and scarcely affect your download

5. In the Max concurrent download tasks number put it to 1 if you have a low speed connection. If you have a high speed connection you can leave it in 2-4. But keep in mind leaving it at 1 will still be faster.

6. Allow bitcomet trough your firewalls. If you have Vista it will do it automatically after you restart your computer. If it doesn't, or you don't have vista I believe, it is the same process with other windows:

-go to contorl panel and change to classic view

-click the the ALLOW a program through windows firewall

-go to the exceptions tab

-click add port and put Bitcomet in the name and the port you chose for bitcomet in step 4. Do this for TCP and also for UDP

LT

7. Enable "Long-Time seeding" this will make you be able to download from other people who have this option enabled, if you have this option enabled the torrent files that you have stoped will still be seeding (at the limit that you set it to) I leave it at unlimited because I rarely stop my tasks but when I do I set it to 13kB/s

8. Restart your computer doing so the settings will take effect. Open your bitcomet, when you look at the right hand corner you see that lovely, WAN green light with your IP. Check if the port you chose is ok by going here http://www.canyouseeme.org/

**If you have PORT-MAPPING ENABLED (on) and firewalled it will only see your port if you have bitcomet on, if you close bitcomet and check your port it will tell you it's closed.

If you see it yellow (blocked) or worse gray (Unknown) don't go crazy right click and make it check again (at least 3 times) if it still turns out bad. It may be due to your ISP, but you will notice that your max downlaod rate stays relatively the same (well thats in my case anyway)

Capture4

I know it doesn't affect ME much because I used to get the gray light and I have the same download speed and upload speed as it was in green.

Again try going here http://www.canyouseeme.org/ put one of the ports you chose from step 4 and check if everything is ok AND YOU SHOULDN'T worry about it MUCH (haha). If not pick another port.

That's the guide and thanks for reading.

Thanks Great Stuff... Did the portions of them in the Networks and Sharing Center... but none of it in the Bitcomet client itself. Thanks.

  • Are you trying to set up portforwarding or static IP? if so i will be making a quick summary of that in my next post.

If not: try giving me the name of your router what OS are you using and what firewall.

  • Hello Dheeru

First, you have to know the IP of the router, then put it in your browser and the router login screen will come out. You should know login information with sufficient privileges to configure the router.

Now, you have to define a new "rule" in the router telling it to allow application access for Bitcomet. You have to navigate and find the page responsible for any of the following: "firewall", "NAT", or "Port Forwarding" configuration. In this page, define a rule with the following parameters:

1- Application name: Bitcomet (or some other name)

2- Type of port: Both TCP and UDP. (I'm not sure if you only need TCP)

3- Port number of application: ##### (the number indicating the listening port of Bitcomet on your machine).

Then, usually, the page will inform you if you have to restart the router to apply the settings.

After that, go back to BitComet and look at the right most end of the status bar (the status bar is found at the bottom). It should display a yellow circle along with: "Blocked: ###.###.###.###" indicating that your Bitcomet listening port is blocked. Wait a moment and it should go to green indicating a successful connection.

    Good luck.

Good work my friend , your post is really usefull specially for vista users , i don't know how is working for you vista because i had a lot of troubles , i couldn't find out why my wan (listen port) were blocked many time using allways latest version of bitcomet . I had to add more allowances in my firewall in properties but now i'm vulnerable to any shit that pass thru my firewall , if you have a better knowledge about i will appreciate if you would give me some ...

all the best !

  • Thanks for reading and for reminding me I updated the post now! Added a new step 6. I beleive it might help you with your problem.

http://www.canyouseeme.org/ just go there and put the port you chose and is in the exceptions of your firewall

If it checks ok then you don't have to worry about it being blocked (I personllay think that Vista is the culprit of this)

  • If you want to check whether your Port is open or not (in other words, checking if your portforward worked), head to: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

    1. click Proceed.

2.Type the Port you're using in BitComet

    3. click 'User Specified Custom Port Probe'

    4. In the results, if it says that the port is Open, then you're all set!

Your BitComet should now be functioning properly.

hey rulier thanx, i already opened the ports on my router, did dmz, enabled upnp i even disalbed firewall of my router but my wan ip address' still blocked.. i guess this is an issue with my isp, i havent checkd if i get the same prob straight to my modem, though... im using modem-router and router, that's why.. =( i hope i cud get to see that green circle on the bottom right corner of my bitcomet window..

  • It could be that you only enabled upnp on your router but you din't enable it on Bitcomet. If you did it could be due to some other settings on your router or as you said your ISP. Try looking for a firmware update for your router if you get the green light directly from your modem.

  • Well it mstly depends on your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and if you have a router or not. I mostly stick to using the ports between 55000-60000 which mostly give me good results. Some times I get green light with a 4 digit port! If you tried allowing the ports through your firewall(s) and your router (if you have any) then it's probably your ISP.

  • I also have DSL and that same connection speed but I think theres something wrong with your units, you mean your maximum you get is 55kB/s. See:

kbps means kilobit per second AND kB/s means kiloByte

8 Bits = 1Byte so.. you actually have to divide your 512kbps by 8 and you get 64kB/s that is your maximum download speed and due to some small facts like (distance, resistance in wires, packet loss) you take a few kB/s thats why you might not always get to the max download of 64kB/s

  • Your not giving me much information here but a 2mbps connection where i live is 64kB/s but from the bit of info you give me i think your max UPLOAD rate is 128kB/s so I think your pretty good with that.

  • 55KB/S IS GOOD ,2KB/S BEATS A BLANK ... AS LONG AS SOME PEER(OR COMBINATION THERE OF) HAS 100% of the file u want THINGS COULD BE WORSE.SO HANG IN THERE ...P2P = SERVICE DIVIDED BY PATIENCE

  • As he said the problem with that file is that it has few seeders and/or stingy seeders So.. what to do? Try to find that thing your downloading in another site with more seeders it may be of bigger or smaller size. The other option is be patient.

Jul 18, 2008, 11:05 AM [Reply]

Thanks a lot. I (guess I) did everything you said correctly, although I've never seen the green light.

Maybe I'm not as smart as I think I am :P

- I've allowed Bitcomet through my firewall, both TPC and UDP;

- I've portforward my router and double-checked it with the help of 'portforward.com';

- I've checked my port status with the help of 'canyouseemee.org.'. It gives me two types of errors: Connection timed out and Connection refused. Not the right conclusion I think.

- I've double-checked my port status with the help of 'grc.com'. It told me my port status is Stealth. Is this any good?

I'm using listenport 27590. It's about the highest number I can get by clicking the 'Choose random port' option.

Downloading in Bitcomet seems to be very randomly. One download rises up to about 180 kB/s with 2 seeds, suddenly falls back to 0 kB/s with only 1 seed left and finally did some short peaks of 30 kB/s with no seeds at all. The same download give a quite steady rate at about 22 kB/s in Vuze (new Azureus) all the time. No stalling at all!

Can someone help me with these issues? I would really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance.
