Larry David Putting Woody Allen Impression To Good Use

Larry David Putting Woody Allen Impression To Good Use Oh, for God’s sake. Woody Allen’s been making us take him seriously for the last few years, ever since Match Point got a whole bunch of attention for essentially being a bad Hitchcock imitation. Now Allen is done making movies in Europe and is coming back to his stomping grounds of New York. And what movie does he plan to make? Why, one about a creepy older man having an affair with a young, hot woman! But there’s a twist this time—Woody Allen won’t be the creepy old man. Larry David will.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the Curb Your Enthusiasm star and Evan Rachel Wood, of Across the Universe, will star in Allen’s next project. No one knows the plot, but do we really need to know? David makes an excellent, excellent stand-in for Allen, and Wood is probably more talented than Scarlett Johansson, so I can’t really argue with the casting. But there is a 40-year age difference between these two, and the odds of there being a romance are about as high as the odds of David’s character neurotically complaining about some minor aspect of his life. One part Curb Your Enthusiasm, two parts Manhattan, and there you have it.

Groan. You’re better than this, Woody Allen! Don’t make this the movie we’re all expecting it to be! Give young women the respect they deserve, and stop trying to make neurotic New Yorkers worthy romantic leads. Allen and David will probably make a great comedy team, and the people who can put up with Allen’s shtick will probably love it. I’m just wishing Evan Rachel Wood could find a better way to establishing herself as a movie star, rather than becoming another token Woody Allen young blonde. I guess Scarlett Johansson had the sense to get the hell out of there, though I’m not sure who else can be enamored by her “talents.” Wood, if she’s the real deal, would be better off skipping this party entirely.
