Release of J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' Pushed to 2009

HOLLYWOOD - J.J. Abrams' Star Trek revamp is about to boldly go ... somewhere else.

Variety is reporting that Paramount will push the movie's release from Dec. 25 of this year to May 8, 2009. The studio feels the film has greater potential as a summer blockbuster rather than as a Christmas release.

"Star Trek (watch trailer) is moving to summer because its has so much boxoffice potential," Paramount spokesman Michael Vollman said. Vollman also denied the project is in any way troubled.

"It does not need any script tweaks. They're two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas."

While the film's box office potential was never in doubt, the new slot does seem to be a good one.

Star Trek has no competition on the new date, although it opens one week after 20th Century Fox bows X-Men Origins: Wolverine and one week before Sony is slated to bow the Da Vinci Code sequel Angels and Demons. http://www.hollywood.com/news/Star_Trek_Release_Pushed_to_2009/5072795
