We are living in an era of plastic prophets: Details of the new Indiana Jones film have been revealed at this years’ Toy Fair. MTV has images of upcoming Indy products being previewed now. LEGO has unveiled mini versions of the film’s characters including weensy versions of Indy (toting a very big gun), Cate Blanchett’s bobbed villain, and Shia LeBoeuf’s character.
Most newsworthy is the miniature crystal skull, set atop a hitherto unseen boney body, fueling rumors that the titular skull of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is in fact an alien of some sort rather than a legendary relic, as in other the films. The description on the back of the box divulges that that the figure is related to the climax of the film and refers specifically to the lost Temple of Akator – which supposedly is taken over by Blanchett’s character Irina Spalko.
That Lucas and Spielberg’s upcoming film should exemplified with toys is no surprise as both directors have made a mint off merchandising. Lucas pads his nest egg with endless returns on Star Wars toys and Spielberg’s film Jurassic Park featured the dino-shill inside the film itself. Can we say synergy, boys and girls?
