It seems impossible to believe now, but there was a time when Nicolas Cage was not a walking punchline. Those days, it seems, are long gone. Cage is signed on for another project with a completely absurd premise, and as The Hollywood Reporter announced today, he’s got a co-star too.

Rose Byrne will join Cage in Knowing, about a woman who prophesizes the dates of several key events, writes them down and buries them in a time capsule. Cage plays a man who discovers the time capsule and tracks down the woman, played by Byrne, who starts to remember mysterious events in her childhood.

Seriously, can this be anything but National Treasure with a supernatural twist? Does Cage just sign on to any project that might let him look dashing and mysterious on the poster? The director, Alex Proyas, also made The Crow and Dark City, so we can count on Knowing to not be quite as cartoony as National Treasure. Still, the very concept seems absurd and silly, and Nicolas Cage seems ready to drag poor Rose Byrne along on another of his misguided adventures.
