10,000 B.C. had the second largest opening weekend of the year so far with $35 million. That may not seem too bad, but it's a big step backward for director Roland Emmerich whose last directoral effort, The Day After Tomorrow banked nearly twice that when it came out four years ago.
To his credit, Emmerich brought his ancient epic in on a relatively paltry $105 million compared to the $125 million is spent on Tomorrow. However, a $35 million opening weekend isn't great news for 10,000 B.C.. It's going to have to rely on the international markets to break even. Here's hoping Europe is willing to shell out the cash to see woolly mammoths no matter how awful the movie might be.
The other competitor for worst movie of the weekend, College Road Trip came in a distant second place with $14 million while Jason Statham's The Bank Job trailed in at fifth place with $5.7 million.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day opened in a limited 535 theater release but just missed the top ten by $300,000, losing out to Fool's Gold. At $4,700 per theater it beat out all but the top two movies in the top ten. Not bad, but no word yet on whether or not it will enjoy any wider release.
