All instrumental progressive acts are not a new thing in metal. They usually perform "music for musicians" as some critics said because of the complex sounds those bands create, a statement that in my opinion is not entirely true. You can manage to appreciate good music without being a musician just by listening carefully, looking for a deep experience.
Most people will recognize names like Gordian Knot, Spastic Ink., Dysrhythmia, Planet X, Liquid Tension Experiment and Kong (and if you do not know them, you are missing a lot of transcendental music). Above them all flies a band name Canvas Solaris in the realms of progressive technical metal at the Olympus of the musical spectrum.
They are from Georgia, USA. Their music is a museum of subgenres, landscapes, sounds, feelings and out of this world skills. Canvas Solaris plays insanely technical music (as in "really fucking hard to play" music), that being all around time changes, odd song structures, absence of melody (in the conventional sense) and heard to be believe playing. That is the reason why they called their first album "Sublimation" (for those of you who has no idea what sublimation means, it is a defence mechanism of the ego in which the person takes negative instincts and turns them into a creative and productive force. For example, a person with paedophile tendencies who becomes a great paediatrician or an aggressive and competitive person who becomes a great sportsman). I don't know what the hell they are sublimating but sure they've become an amazing creative force!
In their EP and first album, the style is more straightforward and metal. As often occurs with this kind of bands, the high amount of experimentalism takes them to more calm and introspective subgenres, so in the next two albums you can hear a blend of psychedelic rock (with the incorporation of synthesizers), jazz, progressive rock, metal and the use of a very varied range of percussion.
An outstanding band for your musical delight. Their music will take time and several listens to their albums to grow on you, but I assure you that it will.
