Have you ever heard about 'Ame-Yoko'?
that is an old market near Ueno station, tokyo.
'Ame' means American, and 'Yoko' means a side road.
(we call side-road 'Yoko-cho' in japanese).

This market was made in 1945, occupied japan.
and made by some repatriates from Manshuria.
They were selling some american surplus and foods for poor japanese people.

But In 1970s, Ame-Yoko became more popular as a import clothing market again.
some young japanese started to get fashionable USA,UK,french clothing

like Converse,Fred perry,Lacoste,,,etc.

Now,Ame-Yoko is still busy,
we can get everything, fish,dried fruits,cosmetics,clothing,sweets,golf implements,jewels,etc......

I go to Ame-yoko once a month, and get some asian spices and dried fruits from good-natured Taiwanese.
And twice a year, I buy Levi's from suspicious Chinese.
It's not japan, it is like a borderless country.

If you have a chance to come to Japan, visit Ame-Yoko.

but take care of your wallet, because some pickpockets are always watching!
