HOLLYWOOD - Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks has been elected as one of the vice presidents of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The AMPAS announced Hanks' appointment on Wednesday after he previously served as a governor of their actors’ branch.

Meanwhile, film producer Sid Ganis was reelected president for his third term.

Ganis enthuses, "I'm truly honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve as president of the Academy. There are so many interesting projects going on in the organization. I'm excited to have the chance to help steer those along and to bring even more to our wide-reaching agenda."

The AMPAS is the body responsible for awarding Oscars.
