The always classy guys at AICN are, as usual, tooting their own horn. In a recent talkback post their TV editor Herc, when speaking about Star Trek proudly declared, “I know a whole fucking lot about this movie that you do not. Wake up, Trekkie!!!!” And that’s rather appropriate, since with the exception of a few great tidbits uncovered our friends over at TrekMovie.com, real Star Trek fans have mostly been left out in the cold on the movie so far; while sites like AICN, which have rather proudly bashed Trek in the past, cozy up next to the production and whisper secrets they aren’t sharing with fans among themselves.
It’s getting depressing.
Since we now know that Herc knows more about the movie than any Trek fan, what can he tell us about it? He dropped a hint in the same talkback where he pronounced his information superiority. Apparently, the rumors of Shatner being left out of the film may have been untrue. He says, “All publicity about Shatner not playing Old Kirk in the movie is lie. Word to your mother.”
That publicity he’s talking about, came straight from the mouths of the film’s director JJ Abrams, one if its stars Leonard Nimoy, and the great William Shatner himself. So news bulletin: AICN has just called Abrams, Nimoy, and Shatner a bunch of liars. Nice. I’m sure this’ll get them another exclusive.
Anyway, while I’d love to see Shatner back in his uniform again, I’m not sure it’s necessary for this movie. Kirk has already had his death scene, no reason to shoehorn him into another movie just to have him there. If there’s a good reason, then go for it. But don’t do it just to do it.
