news:blended 10.13 - 10.19

Too lazy to read all the wonderful news our insightful crew scours the globe to bring you every day? Too outmoded to have an MP3 player for the podcast? Shame on you all! However, being the generous lot we are, welcome to news:blended, your weekly guide to the most interesting stories reported on Cinema Blend over the last seven days.

Although he has done nothing for the cause of peace, Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. It was just that sort of week. Fans of the “classic” Star Trek are worried that the new J.J. Abrams movie might actually be good, not a piece of shit like they are used to. Writers are getting set to stop adapting classic television shows and penning remakes and sequels. Many discombobulating things are happening. That’s right, discombobulation is upon us. If Josh doesn’t fire me for Saturday’s wrap-up, I’ll see you next week.

SATURDAY
Josh fears Star Trek movie will entertain all, not just him.
Mack says screw the whole thing, bitches.
Except for Kahn, Star Trek has been one long sorry mess. Lousy actors (mostly,) lousy stories, lousy sets (at least on the television show) make for lousy entertainment. But people like what they are used to and some hardcore fans worry that J.J. Abrams will make something that is actually entertaining, not just cheesy entertaining. So we sent some open letters out for J.J. to read. Instead of checking them out, try to find William Shatner’s SNL appearance where he attends that convention. Still the best SNL skit ever and the one time in his life where Shatner and entertainment actually come together as one.

SUNDAY
Yes, the NYFF continues.
Cage wrestles way into our hearts.
How long is the New York Film Festival anyway? More importantly, how long can Katey Rich go on watching movies and interviewing all the big timers who are pimping their movies? There are, literally, one ton of Katey’s excellent interviews and reviews this week. Check them all out, or be forever ignorant of things. Mack hasn’t been as busy so he is pushing the idea of Chris Benoit rather than Nicholas Cage for the lead in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. It’s a bold casting choice…wait, is bold the right word?

MONDAY
Nobel Prize now less relevant than ever.
Peter Berg back in the desert.
It’s time for the Nobel Committee to come up with a prize in either liberalism or ecology. They keep giving the Peace prize to people who have nothing to do with Peace but are good left-wing greenies. First is Wangari Maathai, that woman in Africa who planted trees, now it’s going to Al Gore and his movie. I recycle every god-damn week, Committee, where the hell is my prize? On a happier note, former pretty good actor turned pretty good director, Peter Berg, may be in line to direct Dune. I don’t give a crap about Dune, but I like Peter Berg, so maybe he can turn it into a good movie.

TUESDAY
Set phasers to: Casted!
Come for the trailer, stay for Will Smith, maybe.
It’s done everyone, Chris Pine is now Captain Kirk. That’s right, a guy you don’t know, and who is younger than he is supposed to be is going to try to be a no-talent ham. That’s the key for playing Kirk, right? In more promising news, seven minutes of Dark Knight footage will be shown before IMAX screenings of I Am Legend this December. This presents a problem for those of me who love Batman but aren't nuts about either IMAX or Will Smith. Oh, whatever shall I do?

WEDNESDAY
In a new twist, old actor against remake of their movie.
We pimp the Hellboy 2 site.
Tippi Hedren doesn’t want a new The Birds remake to occur. There are two problems with that. First, no one cares what Tippi Hedren thinks. Second, everyone likes to look at Naomi Watts, who was named to star in the remake later in the week. So Hollywood gives the old middle finger to Tippi. Thanks for trying. We don’t give the middle finger to the Hellboy 2 website. In fact, we basically beg you to go see it. I thought I was supposed to try to get people to come to this site.

THURSDAY
Mack rants in response to someone’s response to his rant.
Josh boosts sales of Depends.
Another website responded to Mack’s rant about not seeing Star Trek with their own analysis of why he was wrong, or something. Mack responded by re-ranting about how they can take their Enterprise and shove it. Mack gave no ultimatum, though; as Michael Scott says “they always give an ultimatum.” Josh may have cut some sort of side deal with makers of incontinence garments. His review of 30 Days of Night is causing one theater to give out Depends. Seriously.

FRIDAY
Shatner makes most of us happy by saying we won’t have to see him.
Josh saves time by panning JLA before it is even made.
Some people are probably unhappy that William Shatner is not going to be in the new Star Trek movie. Not me. Watch his denial video in Friday’s article. His “I don’t do cameos” comment says all that need to be said about that annoying tool. Not that he isn’t a wonderful person, though. Another wonderful person is my editor, Josh Tyler. Josh doesn’t waste time by waiting for a movie to actually be made and watching it. He knows Justice League of America is going to suck, even though it is probably two years away. I’m hoping he’s wrong, but he’s probably right.

That’s all for another week of news blending. It’s like what you get at Jamba Juice, but cheaper and not quite as healthy. If you liked it or didn’t, leave some feedback.
