Every time I watch 300 it reaffirms my believe that Zach Snyder is the right guy to bring Watchmen to life. It’s all I can base my opinion on until some actual footage of Watchmen shows up. Apparently some people more “in the know” agree that Snyder is doing a bang-up job on Watchmen, however, at least according to the news making the rounds today.
Moviehole reports that an inside source at Warner Brothers let them know that the studio is happy enough with Snyder’s work that they’ve shelled up more cash for the movie. Specifically, they’ve provided funds for Snyder to film the meta-drama Tales of the Black Freighter, which will be released as part of the movie’s DVD release.
For those who don’t know the Watchmen graphic novel, Tales of the Black Freighter is a comic book story told within the Watchmen story that parallels events in the main plot. Personally, I’ve never been fond of that aspect of the graphic novel and I have to admit I tend to skip past parts of the Black Freighter story when I re-read Watchmen. That’s just me though, and the notion of seeing it brought to life is still exciting to me.
I do have to wonder how Black Freighter will be realized in a movie format. Will it now be some sort of animated short or film, or will we simply see the comic book brought to life on the pages of the comic or in the imagination of the young boy who reads the comic in Watchmen? I have no clue, but it’s cool to hear this is already being planned for the DVD release. It’s also a good sign that Snyder’s doing the job we’ve all expected since we heard he was the one to head up the movie adaptation.
